Because it comes in so many different forms, fencing can be extremely varied both in terms of its appearance and functionality. This is often also reflected in the cost suppliers will charge for various fencing solutions. If you have a tight budget or a large area of ground to fence off — and need to keep the cost per metre relatively low — then there are a number of options available. When installing a fence on a budget, it is usually best to pick from one of the following systems.

Chain Link Fences

This type of fencing is seen all over Australia and much of the rest of the world for one, simple reason – it is cheap. To begin with, chain link fences do not require a great deal of material to form. They are made by machines extremely cost-effectively from strands of wire that interlock with one another. Even the slightly more expensive version that has its wires coated with an outer sheath of plastic is cheaper than many other types of fence. What's more, it is cheap to distribute since it comes supplied in rolls. Simply unfurl it and fix it to metal poles every few metres. One downside of chain link fences is that they offer very little privacy, however.

Wire Mesh Fencing

Good for keeping wild animals out and pets – or livestock – inside, wire mesh fences are a little more costly than chain link fences. However, they are also sturdier. This means that they are harder for a would-be intruder to cut through or prise out of the way. In addition, they require very little foundation work to provide a solid barrier which means they are a cost-effective option when security is an issue.

Overlap Panel Fences

If you want a wooden fence that will provide privacy and security, then the best value for money on offer will often be overlap panels. These can be fixed to concrete or wooden fence posts, as preferred. Unlike tongue-and-groove panels, for example, overlap ones can be manufactured with lower-grade wood that has been cut into thin sections. This means being able to get more fence panels per dollar spent. These sorts of panels are also relatively straightforward to install and replace.

Concrete Fences

Concrete panels are a bit more costly than wooden ones but require no upkeep and will last for a lifetime. They provide security and privacy and can be stacked on top of one another until the desired fence height is reached. One drawback, however, is that they are heavy and, therefore, require more people to install them.
