Designer gates for your home can make the outside entryway look very grand and elegant, while also keeping your property secure and private. Choosing designer gates can also mean a unique look that will make your home stand out from everyone else's. When you're ready to work with a designer to create a personal style for your home's gate, note a few things you don't want to overlook in the process.

Maintenance of material

As with choosing any gate, you want to note how easy it will be to maintain the material. Wood will eventually chip, warp, or crack, and may need fresh paint or stain over time. Steel may rust and corrode and need repair. Aluminum is very lightweight and durable, but it may also suffer more dents and dings than other material because of its lighter weight.

While this maintenance is important for any gate, it becomes even more so with a designer gate. This is because damage or wear and tear to the gate can interfere with the design; if a designer forges an intricate swirl pattern onto a steel gate, that rust may be more noticeable in those swirls. If your initial is carved into wood, a chip or crack can make the initial unrecognizable. You may be able to put off these repair jobs with a standard gate and not mind the look of wear and tear, but since damage can detract more from a designer gate, be mindful of needed maintenance over the years.

Security

If you want a gate to be as secure as possible, you need to ensure you're not sacrificing this function with your chosen design. Will an open pattern on the gate mean that someone can more readily reach through the gate and unlatch it? Will using glass mean that someone might actually be able to simply break through the gate? Discuss your property's security with your designer so you have a gate you love but that is also very safe.

Resale value

A high-quality gate might improve your home's resale value if it adds privacy and security, but note that a gate that is overly personal might actually lower that value. Future homebuyers may not need your initial carved on their gate or may find that your bold steel structure is too bold for them. If you never plan on selling your home, then it's good to choose a design that works just for you, but if you think you will ever put your home on the market, opt for a gate that's a bit more neutral.
