Homeowners who wish to install automated gates have to choose a vehicle detection system that will trigger the gate to open when a vehicle is within the range of that detection system. This article discusses two car detection systems that you can choose from as you install an automatic gate on your fence.

Car Detection Probes

Car detection probes are cylindrical objects that are placed several inches away from the opening of the gate. They are placed parallel to each other on either side of the driveway. These probes eliminate the need to use some other device, such as a gate opener to open or close the gate when you (or your guests) approach in a car. One major downside of these probes is that any metallic object (such as a dog collar or a bicycle) can trigger the gate to open. Additionally, strong vibrations caused by passing trucks in busy neighbourhoods can trigger the gate to open even if there is no car approaching it. The major advantage of these detection systems is that they are easy to maintain. They are also the most affordable car detection systems.

Car Detection Loops

The car detection loop-wire can be buried close to the surface of your driveway. A groove may be cut into your existing driveway in order to install this loop. Once installed, the groove can be sealed with a concrete or asphalt sealant. These loops come in several configurations. For example, some car detection loops can hold the gate open for as long as there is a car in the path of that gate. Others can trigger the gate to reverse if an obstruction is detected within the path of the closing gate. Others offer free entry and exit (that is, you do not need a remote or keypad to open the gate). Car detection loops are harder to maintain because the wires easily break. These systems are also more expensive than car detection probes. However, the variety of car detection loops allows each homeowner to choose what will serve his or her needs very well.

You may need to talk to a fence professional before you choose a particular car detection system for your automatic gate. For example, he or she may advise you to install reverse loops in case several vehicles enter and exit your home at the same time. Such a car detection system can prevent your guests from having to wait while the gate closes fully, and then opens to let the next car through.
